About Me

The Full Story

Kathryn Terrill

Welcome — I’m Kath

I’m a qualified social worker with over 25 years of experience in the mental health field, and I bring a warm, holistic, and non-judgemental approach to my counselling practice.

My work is deeply shaped by both professional training and personal experience. Having engaged in my own therapeutic journeys as well as delivered many therapeutic approaches, I understand how transformative—yet vulnerable—the counselling process can be. I'm here to walk alongside you with empathy and grounded support.

With a background in natural health and social work, I view wellbeing as a tapestry woven from many threads—our physical health, emotional world, relationships, history, identity, our life circumstances, and the social and cultural environment in which we exist. My work in the public and private mental health systems, in the criminal justice system, as an academic lecturer in social work, and in the IVF sector mean I welcome all that you bring to our session together with deep respect and care. My aim is to support the essence of who you are, helping you feel more grounded, empowered, and at home within yourself.

Specialist in donor conception counselling,  IVF counselling and donor- linking

I offer specialist counselling in the areas of donor conception and assisted reproduction, with both professional expertise and lived experience in this space.

I’m a full member of ANZICA (Australia and New Zealand Infertility Counsellors Association), and previously worked at the Victorian Assisted Reproductive Treatment Authority (VARTA) as a Donor Conception Linking Counsellor.

Donor conception conversations and connections are complex and deeply personal, and I tailor our work to suit your unique circumstances, while also drawing on current and emerging research, the voices of donor-conceived people, and my clinical experience working with all parties impacted by donor conception. I believe there is no universal roadmap—every journey is different and deserves to be treated that way.

My clinical approach is informed by my work with:

  • Donor-conceived adults, both those who have always known they were donor-conceived, and late discovery donor-conceived adults. In some cases, I have needed to tell people that they are donor conceived as part of my work at VARTA.

  • Children and adolescents who are donor conceived

  • Parents navigating how and when to talk with their children about their conception. This includes solo mums by choice, same-sex couples and heterosexual couples.

  • Older parents of donor conceived adults who have never told, and now wish to, or their adult children have discovered they are donor-conceived via commercial DNA testing.

  • Donors of all ages, from younger donors to those involved in donation decades ago.

  • People considering or initiating contact, considering linking, or navigating newly discovered genetic connections, as either a donor, a donor conceived adult or as a parent of a donor conceived child or children.

What to Expect in a Session

Counselling with me is a collaborative, respectful process where you're supported to explore whatever is most important to you—at your own pace, in your own way.

I offer a calm, compassionate space where there’s no pressure, no judgment, and no “right” way to feel. Whether you’re navigating a crisis in your family or with your identity, you’re making donor conception related decisions, processing complex and intense emotions, or simply needing to be heard, I’m here to walk alongside you.

Sessions might involve:

  • Unpacking your thoughts and feelings around linking, telling, or identity

  • Exploring your story and defining what you need right now

  • Gaining clarity around decisions, timing, and next steps

  • Processing difficult emotions like grief, anger, guilt, confusion, or uncertainty

  • Working through relational challenges or communication concerns

  • Simply having space to be yourself and feel supported by someone who ‘gets it’

I tailor each session to your needs—whether that means crisis support, deep reflection, practical planning, emotional support, or all of the above. I cater for people wanting a single session, or those who are wanting longer-term work. You don’t have to prepare anything in advance. Just come as you are.

Sessions are currently held via an easily accessible telehealth platform.
